About Us

About us. We are a family owned science company that started in 1998. We are located in the foothills of the Cascade Range in Oregon. Our company name, Ring of Fire Science, was derived from the name geologists gave the horseshoe shaped area around the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Ring of Fire is the location of 81% of the great earthquakes and 70% of the world's active volcanoes. Living near Mount Saint Helens our family has visited the mountain many times before and after the May 18, 1980 eruption. Mount Saint Helens is just one of the many active and dormant volcanoes in the Cascade Range where we live.

Tom and Myrna in the Cascade Mountains

Our company began with one Earth Science textbook and rock kit on igneous rocks. The kit was so successful that Myrna, the author, began writing other textbooks using the same format. Soon there was a unit of study that included five books. There were four textbooks and a rock and mineral identification book.

Homeschooling parents loved the materials and asked for more. They also wanted Myrna to introduce each lesson so students so they would have a greater understanding of the topic of each lesson.

Over the years as new material was introduced the older material was revised. Today Ring of Fire Science is sells over 30 different textbooks and eight different rock kits for students in PreK through high school. Our science materials are divided into three levels: Activity books, Level I and Level II.

Ring of Fire Science Products

Our science activity books are designed for students in all grade levels. There are 15 science activities in each book with a central theme. Each book also contains information about the science behind the activities.

Level 1 Units of study are designed for students of all ages interested in rock and mineral identification. These units contain video lesson, textbooks, quizzes, hands-on activities and rock kits. There are 12 lessons in each textbook plus hands-on activities.

Level 2 Units of study are designed for students in middle school and high school. They contain video lesson, textbook, quizzes and hands-on activities. There are 16 lessons in each of these units.

What others are saying about us

The American Federation of Mineralogical Societies Junior Chairman wrote an article for the A.F.M.S. October 2012 Newsletter about Myrna and her activity based science books. He urged all members to check out her materials because of the wealth of information for junior members of the society.

Myrna was named the 2007 Professional of the Year for Science Textbook Publishing Industry. She was also named one of the top 101 Industry Experts in 2010 by Cambridge who's Who.
